The copious amounts of advertising money we receive from the various ads plastered all over the site means there comes a point where we at the PRC.net HQ grow tired of orgies with the finest escorts available in North America and occasionally have to spend some of that cash on the latest and greatest video games. After it looks as if we’ve been trolled by a pCars video masquerading as pCars 2, ad revenue we’d put aside for Chris to spend on Ultimate Team packs in FIFA 15 has now been prematurely blown on the Bronze membership to Project CARS 2 to get our own impressions of the sequel to the bug-ridden racing sim released earlier this summer.ayy50 GBP translated into roughly $105 Canadian, and this approach was taken by Slightly Mad Studios to ensure a lack of trolls on the WMD forums. Personally, I do not understand what they’re trying to accomplish here, as one of the main marketing points of the original pCars was the fact that 30,000 80,000 people contributed to the development of the game, and now for the sequel, suddenly a huge amount of people helping out with the game and contributing funds is seen as a “bad thing”, and access must be restricted to an elite group of people. Man what?

Anyways, once you sign up for the forums (I had to use my real name, they’re gonna find me right away), you’re given an option of the many toolkits available, and after a few easy hoops to jump through, you end up torrenting a 1.2 GB copy of Project CARS 2. There appears to be no NDA restricting what you can and can’t say about the game away from the WMD forums – it is the same basic advisory screen that consists of “don’t be a cunt and show the game bugging out”, followed by links to a few other threads that also say “please don’t be a cunt because the last WMD period was a disaster with all the trolls.” Keep in mind, the trolls they refer to are kids who pointed out bugs and silenced by moderators unable to take criticism.

While the game was downloading, I clicked around the forums. As commenters on here and Reddit have described, it’s essentially an echo chamber, the game’s own users blind to their blatant hypocrisy. In one post, a user slams Reiza studios for their upcoming unlicensed V8 Supercars, blissfully ignorant of the fact that Project CARS shipped with unlicensed prototypes:

Chris: I guess someone forgot to tell Ian that the Brazilian bunch actually have a working game with above average physics based off 10+ year old rFactor. The only thing they copied was the crowd funding idea that he didn’t invent but the internet did several years back with gofundme, kickstarter and steam green lighting.

The first major problem I ran into during installation, and I wouldn’t call it much of a problem, just something that’s going to make many people laugh, was a little box that popped up in the initial phase of getting the game onto my PC. Upon trying to install the beta for pCars 2, the installer asked if I wanted to get rid of pCars 2 as it was already detected on my system. I never previously owned pCars 2. I had a shitty repacked torrented version of pCars Version 1.3 that I blew away a few weeks ago and some files were still left over, but not pCars 2.

For a game that is supposed to be a technological leap forward and won’t be landing on store shelves for 2-3 years, the base components of the new game are so strikingly similar to the old game, it genuinely believes a few loose files from a shitty outdated repacked torrented copy of pCars is actually a beta version of pCars 2. This is raw confirmation of a cash grab.

PreviousAnyways, you boot the game up, and the menu is the exact same as the original pCars, but with a white background to give it the beta look. It’s the same UI as Project CARS all throughout, hopefully won’t be used for the final product, and in a shocking twist of events, it imported all my old display configuration settings from the original game. A quick trip to the controller menu to assign all the proper buttons on my controller and I was ready to go.

pCARS2Gld 2015-07-18 08-15-30-80You get Mugello, Sachsenring, Sampala (ice racing track), Wildcrest (rallycross), and a Surface Test Track to screw around on. The game comes with three cars, all given unlicensed generic names such as SMS FWD, SMS 4WD and SMS RWD Buggy. Away from licensing issues, it’s a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 7 (I think, someone please help), an Ariel Atom, and a Ford Focus RS.

I don’t like any of these cars.

pCARS2Gld 2015-07-18 08-09-38-62The first track I tried was Sampala, an ice racing track located in Canada. Even with the bare minimum details, it looks gorgeous. That’s it for the positives.

As for the negatives, there was no option to pick winter tires or even off road tires for the Mitsubishi Lancer. I was left with a few unlicensed track day brands that didn’t indicate I’d been given a proper tire compound for the icy surface. Even crazier, while running laps, it felt like the behavior of these tires had been fudged so the game wasn’t a complete clusterfuck on snow. I was driving on tires clearly meant for asphalt racing, and the game appeared stuck in a weird state between “why did you select this tire compound” and “we have magically adjusted grip levels on this compound because we don’t know how to properly model snow tires.” I could never fully predict what the car was doing at any given time, because the physics and tire model were so lackluster. It was very reminiscent of early Assetto Corsa rally tracks where track grip levels had been adjusted to simulate loose surfaces. Whether the adjustments were made within the tire behavior, or surface properties, I’m not sure, and I don’t really care. All I could think was “this is bad and I don’t want to play it anymore.”

I live in Canada. Myself and 38,000,000 other people have to drive to work in the conditions above for eight months out of the year. If this was how our cars behaved in real life, going to the 7Eleven for Milk would be an extreme sport, and there would be 250+ truck pileups on the highway when all the cocaine addicts went back up north to work in the oil fields. We seem to be doing alright, so I don’t understand why driving off-road is portrayed in such a bizarre way within this sim.

Yanking the handbrake as I would in DiRT Rally, a title that is basically the number one rally sim on the market, caused me to violently spin out. Once I got the hang of how lightly I had to tug on the e-brake, I couldn’t carry a drift to save my life. It was really bad.

pCARS2Gld 2015-07-18 08-20-28-95Heading out to Wildcrest yielded similar results despite a total change in the environment. Wildcrest appears to be a fictional Italian rallycross circuit despite the totally not Italian name, and is probably the worst track layout I’ve ever driven on in any racing sim. The track is a 50/50 mix of dirt and asphalt, with unnecessary chicanes and giant rumble stribs that only exist to frustrate you. This track would be a total nightmare online. It doesn’t flow well at all, the car handles just as bad on dirt as it does on ice, you get massive air off the rumble strips (which will cause several people to roll and clog up the track with wrecks), and there’s a jump three times the size of your car on the final straight that sends you flying right off the track if you’re not careful, which can be seen in the distance here:

At random, the game would enable mouse look, completely screwing up my cockpit view to the point where I’d have to exit the game. A few instances, it failed to save my FFB adjustments in the options menu. Little shit like that, stuff that should have been eradicated in the first game which is already on store shelves, hasn’t been eradicated in the beta for the second game.

Meanwhile, games like Assetto Corsa launched with a near perfect driving model in their own tech preview that featured one car and one track. Like, the more I dicked around in the pCars 2 beta, the more I kept finding shit where it’s just like “why?”

The game looks the same, drives about the same, and even thinks leftover files from pCars 1 are in fact from the pCars 2 beta, meaning nothing has been changed under the hood. It has the same annoying bugs (and a few new ones), the same free cam controls, and the same canned FFB effects as the original game release two months ago. People will scream IT’S PRE-ALPHA, but the difference here is that there’s already a complete game to build upon.

So I’m not sure what SMS are trying to accomplish here. It’s not devious enough, nor does it cross enough lines to be labeled a scam, but it definitely doesn’t warrant the praise the endeavour receives from certain publications.

Someone from SMS will probably get booty blasted enough to find my account, ban me, and give me a full refund because they’re legally required to do so, meaning I effectively got to try pCars 2 for free and report back to all readers of PRC.net.

We’ll get our money back, but a lot of people won’t.

  1. Funny thing is, even if Austin brings these issues up on the forums in a genuine “hey guys, this don’t feel right” manner, they’ll all still jump him like the iRacing fanboys did and try to discredit and bury his posts like a bunch of autistic retards.

    Interested to see how long this ‘participation’ lasts before he’s inexplicably banned with no explanation.

    1. iracing anyone? People buried so much of their money so deep now would be a shame to pull out; so they will keep on putting more money as in to not give to waste the previously invested money. Kinda like drug addiction where you just can’t stop spending money on it, you want out, but you’re took hooked to it.

      I give them their great official racing organization, for competitive organized races, and is a pretty active game to play Online.. but people mainly play it because of how much they invested so far, and that for now only iracing can give you organized races whenever you want. For other games you need to join leagues and stuff. So probably AC will appear with organized public racing, we’ll see what happens in the upcoming months. And is still to see if will be a paid service or free for many more (and with ads).

  3. Not sure if it’s just the screen capture, but the gauge cluster in the ‘buggy’ doesn’t appear to be set behind any transparent housing. Small gripe, but it just looks as if it’s nothing more than a flat 2d texture aside from the needles.

    The only track that has been developed for more than a week from this statement is Wildcrest. Other tracks are first renders and have just been made. Apart from cars, which were taken from the 1st game and generified for development reasons (we need to drive something while testing, if they can’t be licenced, they’ll be removed) all other assets and, mainly, tracks were created from ground zero. In 1 month. And with this amount of content and 2 years of development cycle ahead, we are going to have a good game.

Following the development of a game (like it has been with project cars) is the most nice part of joining the “community”.. you don’t need to talk with people or have a conversation with whatever, but reading the dev posts on the official WMD forum and understand how something is build is worth 50 euro and more and more.
    The software (if we talk about the playable game) at this point, hasn’t much to say, it’s what’s behind it that you’re going to pay.

      3. Then it’s not for you.. what the sell (and what they did with pcars) is not the game, it’s neither the pre-purchase of a game (it was only one of the benefits), but instead it’s the possibility to follow and participate to the development.
        If you’re lookg for something to be enjoyed this early.. then it’s not for you, you better consider the game when it will be finished in 1-2 years (if you’ll like it by then…).

    sachsen isnt actually sachsenring as youd expect (unfortunately), rather a ‘fictitonal’ version of the porsche test track. which is cool in its own right, but seems to be lacking some features the real track has at the moment.

    its not a beta!!! :) i imagine this was a slip, but yeah, about one month in development now. idk what youd call it. something like a vertical slice, but an extremely WIP one. nothing wrong with that imo.

    finally, if you were discouraged by or disliked pcars, dont give them your money for this!! like..cmon. i know why the author did it, to get a peek behind the curtain, but the majority of users seem to be people who enjoy pcars and are happy to be on board and supporting the next effort. ill be honest, i wasnt sure if id stick when i put in my 50 quid. but ive been impressed with the speed of progress and a few promising ideas; definitely in it for the long haul.

  10. Just another pretty piece of steaming shit like the first one. I am still hoping I will get the money back I invested in the Pcars1 almost 4 years ago but I will never get the time back I wasted by testing almost every single build and reporting bugs and making suggestions that fell on deaf ears.

    They were going to make a “sim” that catered to the masses no matter what input they got and there were bugs from 3 years ago that made it into the release version.

    1. I tried asking for a refund myself all I got was a senior member saying PCars will continue to get patches and updates to it’s content, and I was told that I should stop playing and erase the game if I want out.

      I loved the SHIFT games, PCars is a fucking joke. I’m glad the cash grab is going to patches and updates but the game still released unfinished. There are a multitude of bugs. I’ve never had a game crash and glitch as often as PCars (their fully released shipped version). This has got to be one of the biggest farces in racing gaming. They should change their studio name from Slightly Mad to Mostly Disappointed.

    What you played doesn’t even come close to a pre-alpha build. All games look and play like complete rubbish for 90% of the time of they’re in development.

    1. This is the exact thing the WMD militant soldiers(I am WMD member but never drank the koolaid) said about Pcars1 in the early days and all the way up to release. The final version drives basically the same as it did in the early PreAlpha days.

      1. It’s been 3 weeks since the development started. When we got the first build of Project CARS 1, it was build 60 or something. For Project CARS 2, we’re not even at build 20…

        Project CARS 2 is still 99% Project CARS 1.

The sad thing is you think they are going to start with 99% Pcars 1 and after a few years they will meticulously build a whole other game while just using the existing game as a kickstart and when PC2 is done it will be something totally different that warrants another full purchase instead of just the half-baked, bug riddled “upgrade” from PC1 that it is sure to be.

    Where is the part in the Reiza’s crowdfunding where you are promised ROI (which still hasn’t happened) and “input” on game development (aka bugtesting that is disregarded, and uploading free reference photos). When did SMS release a polished product that was supported with free updates and content for years?

    Ian Bell has said so much bullshit over the years it could fill a spinoff blog, “Shit Ian Bell Says”.

      1. Same guy doesn’t automatically mean same quality. Physics were implemented and done differently back in the GTR days, he might’ve done GTR well when standards were lower, but he could very well be struggling with the more advanced physics of today’s expectations.

      3. Ian Bell was leading the mod team (Simbin), for F1 2002, before the company ever existed. I believe that a lot of people here are too young to know the history of the driving sim scene.

    He talks like he’s sitting on a high throne of the best sim racing game ever, but in reality he’s sitting on a pile of sh*t. He was luck Steam didn’t have the refund system when PCARS launched.

    Also, Reiza has something he’s never going to have, which is respect from it’s customers/players. People love their work. They’re honest and they do their best with very little. Up until now they were offering extra content for free, while Ian and SMS are ripping off content planned for PCARS as DLC and calling PCARS 2.

    If Reiza had the same amount of funding SMS pulled for PCARS, they would have done much more then what SMS did.

  17. Reiza is the same studio who is using rf1 engine with 90’s gfx? And you believe that 2,2mln euros are enough for a studio to develop a new gfx/physics engine from scratch, and to release and distribute a multi-platform AAA game?

  18. I will say the devs and forum mods on their website are completely nazis. Doesn’t help that their community backs them and helps shout down any criticism. When I was reporting an issue in the bug section, a couple posts responded saying I obviously didn’t have the game and was trying to “put down the game” whatever the fuck that meant.

    Of course after I replied, showing my PS4 copy as proof, my thread got deleted and I was banned from the forums for being “an hater”. I was reporting a bug with the save system for christ’s sake.

    2. or more comfortable message system to news, and a better front page that lists the news, as well as amount of comments inside. Something like bsimracing, virtualr, racedepartment. I get it that they want to keep the theme, but those two aspects could be improved for user comfort, and eliminate the massive scroll you gotta do, or check every news for new comments. :)

      1. Do you wanna setup a forum, with 30 users? I’m not sure if you have figured it yet, but the ones writing here (including me and you) are the same 30 users, every day.
        Go collect more traffic and users, you need to have some interesting contents, not trolling article like this (the “hating” thing could work for a little while but it won’t last long), and in the moment you do a more serious “journalism” (like virtualR, RD.. etc.) you gonna be another clone of those web sites.
        I can write an article per day, on the line of: “Assetto Corsa is crap because [random things..]” …to attract some AC fanboys and fill the comments section, but after a while they will get bored and they will understand the bait-click scheme. That is the main reason of why linking this blog is now censored everywhere.

  22. Couple of thoughts regarding the article and the replies.

    Firstly, I am a PCARS member, and I was with PCARS 1 from 2011.

    PCARS 2 is not 99% PCARS 1 as suggested as there was no ice racing dirt tracks or off-roading of any kind. The physics for that are in very early stages.

    The reason the build doesn’t provide winter or off road tires is because they haven’t been developed yet. This will be an on-going process.

    The moderators are not Nazi’s. You would do well to study some history before you label anyone like that. The moderators are some of the most hardworking and helpful people I’ve ever known. They have posted thousands of times with advice to help forum members solve problems. They are human though, so sometimes lapses in judgement happen, just as with all of us.

    I have posted negative comments numerous times and not been reprimanded. I have been one of the most vocal in my criticism of the lack of triple screen support, the inconsistency in the UI, the lack of support for multiple wheel configurations, the lack of options for on screen steering wheel on or off, and the lackluster career mode.

    In all of those posts I was never threatened with banning or berated by mods. I may not have gotten the answers I wanted but I never felt threatened.

    Ian Bell and Andy Garon in particular are their own worst enemies when it comes to posting sarcasm or derogatory comments. I often cringe at Andy’s posts as he has often blown criticism at the game way out of proportion. He comes across often as angry and impatient, which is unfortunate as he is a very talented individual. Ian has shown from some of his posts that he is letting valid criticism get to him as well. It’s too bad because he has a lot to be proud of in getting this game released.

    It makes me chuckle when reviewers go on and on about bugs without bring up such titles as GT and Forza. Those two games have been bug ridden from the start and both games have experienced numerous delays as well.

    I’m not completely happy with the game as released, because I wish it could have been so much better if different directions had been taken on some features.

    On the other hand, I am still enjoying the game after playing it daily for over four years now. That alone speaks to the quality of the game play.

    I guess this is more than a couple of thoughts so apologies for the length. Am I biased? Of course I am, I have a lot of time invested in the game. I hope though, that I have been able to direct my comments in a helpful way. I truly feel badly that one poster’s experience has led him to believe that all forum members are ‘fucktards’. We aren’t. Most of us are people who just want to share in the development process and help each other out.

    1. That’s why it’s called TEST… the work required to make the physics optimal for this type of surface isn’t worth for a DLC imo. I completely agree on their decision to reserve a proper development cycle for it and to be included in project cars 2.

      3. What remained of the gMotor a base-engine died with Ferrari Legends. Between Ferrari Legends and Project Cars, we had also SHIFT and SHIFT2.
        Project Cars has no “underlying physics” that come from the gMotor, it’s a brand new physics engine. Try harder.

        Re-written code aside (R3E operates the same way), it’s gMotor under the hood, and gMotor by default is capable of off-road stuff, as demonstrated in pCars 1. It’s marketing, just like how EA removes features for a season and re-introduces them next season.

  23. I wish Steam refund was a thing when this came out, as I’d like to re-buy pCars for a cheaper price once it gets some heavy patches.
    I haven’t touched pCars for well over a week now and it was at the top of my radar.

    Basically, I had a G27 and a PS4. I had to buy a T500rs for compatibility with the PS4 back around September, but then we all know pCars got delayed til 2015.
    I got fed up at this point and built a gaming pc so that I can sink my teeth into all the sims that have came out since LFS and GTR2.
    So now I own every sim that I know of, past, present, in-development.
    Which one did I originally buy the wheel for? pCars.
    Which do I play regularly? Assetto, RF2, GSCE, iRacing, LFS, R3e, RBR and Dirt Rally as I am baffled by the release of pCars.

    Enjoyable game yes, but huge shitting of the bed.

    Also, Ian Bell largely contributes to the fact that I may not spend an additional dollar towards SMS.

  24. Racing sims are games but arcade racing games are not sims. Your average gamer that likes NFS, The Crew, Gt, Forza, etc. play those games for the game aspect of car collecting, completing silly goals, blinging out their “whips” with spoilers and 22″ rims and putting giant turbos on their favorite Honda Civics and they say things like, “this is the best racing game ever! It feels so realistic with my 360gamepad!” lol They have no idea what it’s like to drive any car at it’s limit of grip on a track and would probably be too chicken shit to even attempt it.(before you ask….yes, I have many times with my Porsche 944 Turbo(951) and Porsche 930 with semi slicks.)

    Anyone that would trust a “gamer” to review or rate a racing sim instead of a sim racer is a fool but I think we know that no true sim racer would ever doing anything so foolish.

    For your information my rig consists of a Fanatec GT3RSv2 bolted to my office desk in front of a Asus MX279h monitor with Fanatec Clubsport pedals and my attire is usually shorts, t-shirt, socks and a Crown and Coke sitting on the desk at quick access to my left hand.

  25. I take your response to mean you haven’t raced a real car on a track at race speeds? Of course I am not a professional race driver but I am real amateur pilot and I know what the adrenaline feels like at speeds in excess of 175+mph on a track and I know how a car behaves at those speeds.

    I hate to make you feel worse about your do nothing life but I am a real pilot(amateur) and a sim racer.

    I bet you struggle to come in mid pack with Ai at 80% in Pcars. I got bored with the lack of any challenge with the AI at 100%. I usually set the AI in R3e and RF2 at 107-109% for a challenging race…….where you at…..? lol

    1. When i want to race real cars, I go on a track.
      When i want to play a videogame, i turn on my PC or consoles.
      I do not pretend to be a “pilot” only because I play a racing simulator on a PC.
      And no, i never race against the AI (i never did in any of my games) .. I only play online.

  26. Ah….but my bet is you have never been on a real track except for maybe a rental cart that can attain speeds of 25mph or maybe an underpowered FWD like a Civic that understeers at 45mph.

Cheers for saying what needed to be said loudly. SMS are ripping consumers off plain and simple. Cash grab for sure. First game is broken. Properly crapped the bed is an apt description.   29. Sorry, but as an objective third party, clear trolling isn’t entertaining to me unless it’s fully warranted, and you could be a little less negatively biased. It would be ok for people to know our source of frustration is that there is a good physics engine and solid attempt at a deep tire model, it’s just incredibly poorly done and unfinished. Pretty game I wish worked better. Don’t have time to beta test stuff I paid to enjoy.
    P.S. I heard somewhere around here were links to bogus bans Ian handed out. I’d love to see those compiled? Where they at?
