The Laser-Scanned Nordschleife from Assetto Corsa is Now Available for rFactor 2

rFactor2 2015-11-04 15-51-59-27While at work today, I found two dimes on the floor of our shop. Most cultures believe this to be a sign of good luck, and I desperately needed it, given that there was absolutely nothing to report on in the world of Sim Racing today. Last night I’d spent most of the evening at Impulse Sim Racing, and returned home to resume my battle for the top spot on the Bathurst GT3 leaderboards in RaceRoom Racing Experience. Part of the difficulty in managing this site is distributing time between writing about racing sims, and actually playing them. Too much time pumping out articles, and I get rusty on the driving portion. Too much time spent behind the wheel, and 200,000 readers start getting antsy, anticipating the next article. Today, there wasn’t a single thing that would warrant any kind of post.

Then, with an hour left in my shift, this little nugget tripped the spam censors in our comments section, containing two specific MEGA links:

Untitled-2Judging by the title of this post, I’m sure you already know what they contained. The Laser-Scanned version of the Nurburgring Nordschleife, released as premium DLC for Assetto Corsa, has been converted for use in rFactor 2. We’re releasing it to the general public, though nobody here at PRC.net are talented enough to take credit for the conversion process.

EDIT: New links!

The full track can be found here:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/rgi3x9drqbinyu4/ksRing_v0.60.rfcmp?dl=0

And a minor update can be found here:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/pd62kgvv22zcqde/ksRing_v0.60a.rfcmp?dl=0

The track is HUGE, give it some time to install.

With 170+ corners over the span of a daunting 12 miles, the Kunos Simulazioni version of the track is regarded to be the center-piece of Assetto Corsa’s patchy content list by diehard AC fans. The most popular online servers around the clock within the popular Italian racing sim feature the Bridge to Gantry layout, replicating a lap most tourists can experience with their commuter car after paying a small fee. This version featured in this download is the traditional Nordschleife layout without the Grand Prix circuit constructed in the 1980’s, a layout popularized by titles such as Gran Turismo 4, Project Gotham Racing 2, and Forza Motorsport.

    1. Exactly, the guy who converted the track and made the youtube video about it half a year ago, said the track in ac only has 33k verts. Maybe.. but that’s because he converted the visual mesh, which doesn’t need to be as detailed as the physical mesh that isn’t seen, but runs on the car physics. So that physical mesh can have hundreds of thousands of polygons, while the visual mesh is much lower, so that we can run the game at high fps.

      1. And he claimed that he made it “better” than Kunos, rF2 fanboys said it felt better, Associat0r used this as proof Kunos were somehow lying about the fidelity of their physics mesh… I can’t think of a more cancerous userbase.

      2. Even with the lower fidelity mesh, it still feels and drives better with the superior physics and FFB of RF2. AC is ok but it’s no RF2.

      3. Yeah it’s honestly hilarious that RF2’s physics smooth out the actual surface so much that you can’t tell the difference between the physical and virtual mesh, when it’s immediately obvious which AC addons are shitty rips with low res meshes just by how they drive worse.

      1. Yeah exact same mesh or not ,Ive found enougher reason not to load AC up, just done a short race on it, group C, 98 Merc GT1,LMP1’s and GTE’s, 42 cars, set 98 AI 25 aggression, was a frickin blast, 42 AI and they drove beautifully, looking forward to extending race going into night with a bit of rain setting on.

Well that would make you a sad little boy, wheel,pc setup, pedals but you only gonna own AC?
You must be the ultimate sim racer, to leave RF2 out, because what? someone doesnt like AC?or its not on steam and that shit hurts ya head?, fucking pathetic man, a real big fan of motorsport eh? or just enougher playstation gen fool riding the sim hype train?

      3. I own more games and sim racing games, that are on steam. There’s also iracing that doesn’t necessarily need steam.

Either way, the toxic and manipulative people from rf2 community are shitting on various sims. Assetto Corsa is seen as strong present and future competition, so those guys will try to turn everyone against and advertise against it. The same modus operandi against iracing lately, after their real road implementation. Suddenly rf2’s soldiers are trying to show any flaw from iracing and say how much inferior is to their preferred game. Before, they didn’t care about iracing.

A normal person with a balanced mind isn’t obsessive against a game that they say is to terrible. A normal person will ignore it and won’t care about it. But an obsessive and manipulative mind will continue day after day or weekly to advertise against the games they consider competition to their preferred game. So how can ass/hex/hash/durge be so afraid of these games and yet all the time trying to manipulate people that these games are so bad and unrealistic. Their logic is against them. A bad game that is unrealistic no one would give a dime for them, and no one would obsessively bad mouth these days.

calling out Kunos a year after release for missing, broken or poor features is “shitting on various sims.”?

Mate go back only a year or 2 and look what AC bloody fantards were saying about AC and “shitty old RF2” it really was pathetic, ppl like ya self that haven’t even bought or played it, just like Pcars, AC was gonna be the holy grail that blows ISI stuff outta water, ppl saying that before even outta alpha, IMO it failed, and does not look very promising tbh past being a “driving game” with console release, devs calling us stupid for a reason not to have have proper setups, terrible AI, questionable content, but worst of all its brought in a whole new crowd of utter fuck wits, jumping on the sim band wagon, suddenly all experts on race craft and the simulation of it, like I say look at the popular sites back when AC was still up and coming, it borders on hilarious the stuff ppl were saying about rf2 and ISI,I find it a bit funny and ironic now some ppl that like RF2 and remember this BS, point out the flaws of AC (the holy grail),and then be told we are ruining the “community”, what a bunch of utter fucking hypocrites man.

RF2 and ISI deserve ALOT more credit and respect from community, even if not a fan of rf2, ISI tech has powered sim racing for a long time, and continues to do so in a respectable way, Kunos IMO is still in the gray zone, their history is questionable and its still up in the air as to weather AC will sort its shit out and deliver.

        Like

      5. AC-Kunos hasn’t delivered for you? That’s your perspective and preferences. rF2-ISI hasn’t delivered for other people because in their perspective it doesn’t satisfy their preferences.

You can’t satisfy everyone, so every studio tries their best and their vision for a sim racing game. You think the ac community gets offended if hash and other people don’t like AC? It is your preference and you will play whatever makes you feel good and content. The same way we do.

Now there other people who aren’t content with others being content with another sim. And they exist in any sim vs another sim.

You people keep saying that but never actually mention what we lied about. And please don’t come with “THE AI IS FINE GUYZZZZ!!!111”. It’s not. Yes, it works on certain tracks with certain cars, but it also does NOT work on other tracks with other cars.

      2. like when you guys say there isn’t people to race online or that people can just join mid race and ruin it for everybody.

There’s enough drivers to have public races during all day/night, with the biggest activity on european afternoon and evening/night.
Server manager has the option to not let people join mid race.

But even those who join mid race, aren’t wreckers, but if they are, they will get blacklisted or if they join a Minorating server they will be ruled out with a bad safety grade.

Either way, the general rule over here from these article creators is they are trying to give out the idea that AC is broken and you shouldn’t play it. Well what is fantastic is that AC and Pcars are so broken that they get on average between 1500-2000 people in-game each 24h. If these games would be so broken and so bad, we wouldn’t even see 10 people online.

Is just media manipulation that’s happening here, with the target being Assetto Corsa in the last months, and initially when this website was created, it was Project Cars.

      3. That’s the first time anyone from PRC has ever acknowledged that it the AC AI “works on certain tracks with certain cars”, so portraying the AI as a completely broken, irredeemable mess across multiple articles is your first lie.

I’m not sure you read the comment sections at all, since every article about AC is full of comments corrections blatant misinformation and lies that are never acknowledged. Sometimes James will come in and say “ha you proved my point”.

      4. No they don’t, at least not any more in 1.3.4. But even in real life the pace is slower at the beginning in the place, especially because of traffic. But usually some people will want to speed up and overtake all the AI, even if they go outside or about to cause an accident with them, then say they are slow.
If it needs optimizations then so be it, or if 1 or 2 cars get stuck, but the rest of the race continues. A race is not just the first lap.

        Like

        1. That’s funny, I was on 1.3.4 a few days ago to take AI fuckery screenshots for the user submssion. The speed at which they enter Eau Rouge is pretty much pace lap speed. It’s like weaving through traffic on the Freeway.

          Like

      5. James, you should let Sev try it with his pc, because I think your cpu is the one slowing down the AI at crawl speed.

I just tried ferrari 312t at Spa 100% AI, optimum track, max single opponents. Even though I get 30-40fps with so many cars together, everyone passed safely and in normal speed through there.

        1. What an absolute joke.

Just booted up AC to try the Lotus 49 at Spa AGAIN.

16 cars on the grid, passed half the field into La Source just by out-braking them.

The rest downshifted to third gear for eau rouge. I plowed into the back of 3rd place because it was so sudden. I started 15th out of 16 cars.

Can’t believe people actually defend this garbage and say it’s my PC (buttery smooth 60FPS with v1.3.4), or that “it’s the first lap, of course they’re taking it easy.” I would love this magical working version of AC you have.

          Like

      6. How is that broken or unplayable?

If they need optimizations to fill the road more so that they don’t leave so much open space at the start in traffic, then it would avoid situations where the human player can exploit predictable highways to pass half the field.

Besides, lotus49 has v4 tyre model with the new heating model. So is all just a mix of parameters in the tyres that AI isn’t that good with it.

And of course drivers at the back can out break more easily opponents in front at the start of the race. Either way, the AI at Spa first corners of first lap will generally make two lines, so is a predictable situation for the human drive, but for the AI they driver slower because of opponents in front in the same line as theirs; so here the human driver can just take the gap and brake later.

      7. “Of course the AI can’t drive worth a god damn, I mean, the game’s model is flawed and the AI isn’t good enough to handle it. You can’t honestly expect the AI that’s supposed to be imitating Jim Clark and Mario Andretti to put up a fight against an amateur in an Adirondak chair when they’re faced with a car/track combination that’s been in the game since it declared itself feature complete.”

      2. It bothers you that other people don’t want that to happen? I don’t know why you put illegal in quotation marks, because that’s what it is. Someone stole a licensed product where other people worked to develop it using laserscan as foundation and paid money to acquire the rights to use this track in a commercial product.
Now he stole an official and copyrighted race track to put it in another game. And is not even for personal use, but distributed to more people, even if for free.

But it bothers you so much, Dave, that others don’t like what’s happening here. I don’t know who is the twisted here.

So I say rip the good content out of AC, put it in sims that actually have a fucntional core, and be done with it.

    1. The track mesh *feels* just as good as the AC version. So far I’ve only found one track mesh glitch between Pflanzgarten 1 and 2 where the car would do a front flip if you drove over a kerb at a specific angle.

  3. Also Assetto Corsa’s physics are fundamentally flawed, so it can’t handle dedicated race cars properly.

    Assetto Corsa modders:
“- wrong modeling of tire adherence vs vertical load
    – physics engine unable to work with extreme spring/antiroll rates
    – problematic behaviour on kerbs for cars with high suspension rates and reasonable tire damping ratios.

All this issues become more and more relevant for cars with high aero loads, low mass and stiff suspension…”

  4. We talking about rips now?

Some Ruskie bloke on GTPlanet tried to make a racing game, supposedly inspired by Gran Turismo (and “old school”… huh?) Then someone brought up the licensing issues (he had only $600 budget) and prior to this he had asked about ripping cars from PS2 and PSP Gran Turismo titles. I called him out that he is ripping cars from there (and possibly mobile games).

    It went downhill from there..

    1. The fact that they exist doesn’t mean we need it or needed them. The many rf1 conversions were done by one or a couple modders who jumped quickly after Kunos released the modding tools.

Kunos made tracks and scratch made tracks from the community are much more used offiline and online, than any rf1 conversions. Even if many people downloaded them back then, official tracks and scratch made with quality are mostly used.

      3. Kunos doesn’t allow ripped content in their own place (forum/website). And they won’t allow their official content to be ripped and distributed. Kunos doesn’t have to chase after people who rip forza and pcars content, but turn10 and sms have to do that job if they want. The same way FIA went after F1 mods in various sims. Kunos doesn’t own forza and pcars rips, so they have no right or obligation to chase them, only not allow such content to be published in their forum.

  5. Really people are so ignorant? The guy stolen the low poly version of this track (visual mesh), instead of the laser-scanned one (used by the physics), and they still talking about laser scan? Are you dumb or what? Everyone is talking about the good physics in rF2, but the same persons are now excited about a low-poly version of a track? Then you ask why ppl are being labeled as “fanboys”… oh lord.

    1. Didn’t associat0r or hexagramme or whatever their names and alter ego’s are say at one point that Kunos version of nordschleife isn’t even that accurate and laser scan isn’t even important because track surface change every year.

      Like

      1. I don’t know who is associator (??), but he is (almost) right: a track surface is dynamic, it changes constantly (not just every year), but that’s not the point, we are talking about details not just about the fidelity. The difference is having a likely (to the reality) track surface, and a low-detailed track surface. So, before thinking if the track is identical to the real counterpart (it will never be.. in any game out there), the issue here is at a lower level: the track ripped out from the game is NOT the track currently used by the players, but its visual mesh; it’s like having an original 4K picture, but rip a 360p version of it, and still call it “4k” … it’s not, it’s a much lower detailed version of the original image, hence it’s completely pointless for the physics, it’s only a visual representation, that ironically it’s exactly the opposite of what the rF2 users are continuing repeating every day: physics, physics, physics… but now we ignore the physics because we have a nice picture of a iconic track?
This whole thing doesn’t make sense.
