Someone’s figured out how to put Assetto Corsa’s laser scanned tracks into rFactor 2

Continuing with the theme of the Nordschleife-related news today, we here at PretendRaceCars.net have stumbled upon an incredibly interesting video. YouTube user Pierre-André Leclair has uploaded footage of himself driving the highly detailed Nurburgring Nordschleife created by Kunos Simulazioni for Assetto Corsa… except he’s clearly making a lap in rFactor 2.

Rumors of modders figuring out how to convert the incredible tracks from Assetto Corsa into rFactor 2 have popped up every once in a while, with some claiming that more than just the Nurburgring are available, but the above video is our only proof – and the whole scenario is a double edged sword On the positive side, groups like Nords24 would be able to use a much more accurate version of the Nurburgring for their yearly 24 hour race, but on the negative side, a large portion of the sim racing community are extremely hostile towards conversions of content found in other titles.

Eventually, the links will surface, and we’ll get to try everything out for ourselves, even if we have to keep quiet about it.

  1. Have you read the comments section? I can think of two guys who will wank themselves raw over one comment by the converter:

“Seeing the original road mesh, it’s easy to see what are the top priorities with AC, and they are not physics, but visuals. The 22.8km track, had a total of 33k verts total. That’s awfully low. So AC can spend more horsepower on the graphics than rF2, which simulates a lot more things than AC does.”

Be prepared for this quote to be screen grabbed and posted EVERYWHERE.

    1. Hahaha I’m sure your prediction will be proven correct.

Some things they will leave out conveniently:
1: RF2’s low vertex count for their official tracks due to rather poor hardware utilization and general optimization.
2: The lack of a comparable version from ISI or their 3rd party ‘official’ additions.

Anyways, I don’t really see what was so difficult about converting the geometry, nor why it took so long. Dealing with texture ID’s and UV map interpretation should be the hard part.

Hopefully I can grab some of the AC rips in the near future through rf2’s handy server mod download capability (great feature) like I have with pcars rips.

      1. Uhhhhhh damn

I just reformatted over the weekend and decided not to bother backing up my rf2 packages. Pretty stupid idea in retrospect.

I can’t directly recall the names, though Snetterton was one of them. I also could have sworn one of them started with an L, a relatively thin track in terms of width and a decent AI tester for pcars, there’s a pretty sharp downhill left that causes the pcars AI to leave the racing surface when two cars are beside each other.

I just browsed through the pcars pakfiles and now I’m even more confused. Some of the unlincensed pcars trickery tracks use the correct names for rf2, leading to even more confusion.

I’ve seen at least 5 pcars rips in rfactor 2, if I get any of them back I will upload them
        and give you a link.

Pretty annoyed with myself for not backing up the less easily found rf2 packages….

    2. There’s no way that’s an accurate count, my eyeball guess from looking ingame in AC (<1.5m per section, 3-4 across the profile of the road) would be 60k vertices in the visual mesh. Maybe the converter fucked up and didn't actually get the physics mesh at all.

      Like

      1. Hmmm that’s a good point, I believe you are correct that the rendered mesh is not the same as the physical interaction mesh.

Hell, these shills are getting so aggressive that they would happily decimate a mesh and post it as ‘proof’.

Does this guy even simrace, or does he only care about good looking models?
It’s totally bewildering how the community can take a site like BSimracing seriously.

      3. BSR and VirtualR are the reason why we don’t have nice things. Those sites really ruined this community for good.
And then those filthy cowards have the guts to blame it all on Hexagrammes and Associator. Do they think we’re really that stupid?

      6. Yes, what mess? I see that only ass/hex have a problem with f1raer and wim, and they’re trying to turn it into everyone’s problem. Is like when they don’t like AC and iracing, they’re trying to make it sound that no one likes and plays these games.

Also i like how they both here post under Anonymous and react to their own posts. Hex has such a distinctive backstabbing nazi style of posting, it`s hilarious.

If he said that same crap about AC all hell would break loose, but it looks like everybody can just walk all over the rF2 community and nobody gives a shit.

      9. To the anon wondering if Wim only cares about models.

You know man, we used to say that the biggest vaporware in simracing history was GTPC by VLM and in the end it was released. WSGT2 is actually a joke even more than Mak. All that stuff wasted because they changed their mind and after years of teasing on rF1, they announced the project to move on rF2 and then they said that development was stopped and they were not going to release it.

Plus that game Arnold was making using gMotor and WSGT2 models? Yes, that was cancelled aswell.

I rather have Jim Pearson Full IOM be done by best ISI group
rather then a a Laser scan done by anyone.

I doubt there is anyone in other modding platforms of IOM bumps and terrain to start with.

  2. If i could have AC tracks in RF2 it would wipe yet another reason to fire up AC, that list is getting very very small at the moment, and with a console release and fairly low hope for above average AI, it doesnt look like Ill be adding to list anytime soon, although DRM mod will add to reasons to play AC, we will see.

  3. I call total BS on that vert count. Kunos Monza has precisely 209,833 verts and exactly 400k triangles in it’s physical mesh. There is no way Nordschleife is any less than that.

      1. If you are checking the main kn5 file that is not the physical mesh. The physical mesh is in one of the other numbered kn5 files. I don’t remember the number off hand but it was near the middle of the list.

        Like

    1. Well if it’s not BS, then it’s not a conversion of Kunos’s Nordschleife, and all the people having orgasms over RF2’s physics apparently can’t even tell the difference, which just goes to show how little connection there is between the track and the car in RF2.

      Like

  4. My suspicions were correct the ACTUAL vert count for Kunos Nordschleife is 417,706 with a total triangle count of 736,036. So I don’t know what he was smokin’ to get 33k verts. Heck the grass and wall vert count is even 104k which is relatively low in poly count.

      1. Maybe he only looked at the graphical road mesh, not physical. And the physical has much higher than graphical. Either way, no one showed yet image or video evidence of the physical mesh and the poly count.

      2. Sorry for not being clear but those numbers are only for the physical road mesh. The rest of the model is in the millions of triangles.

  5. I’ve had this track for a long time, and with rF2 physics and ffb its one of the most alive wonderful tracks to virtually drive on. Spa is pretty good too. Thanks kunos for spending all that money on laser scanned data for rF2. Cant wait for the DRM mod.

    1. I’m enjoying the laser scanned Nords in rF2 quite a lot too. SO wonderful not having to endure the shit physics and FFB or AC anymore to be able to race that track. I really hope someone will leak it soon so more people can enjoy it.

Spa I never managed to find though.

  6. It’s so great to see you covering the mod scene and giving coverage to the scratch made projects that don’t show up on sites like VirtualR.

Wait a minute, you’re just late to the party in finding an illegal conversion (like the 5-year old Sandrox iRacing rip) and decided to post it because you don’t like the sim in question, and you hate the idea of them having exclusivity to the outstanding content they created, and want ISI to benefit from sitting on their asses for years not making content because they programmed the barely-working features that you feel entitled to.

Posting videos of popular YouTubers trying new content and banning two hated forum trolls is aggressive shilling, but slandering a dev for months, bragging about not playing their sim, posting criticism of their physics and then describing the update that fixes those problems as “minor”, posting videos of their content in other sims, and ignoring their vibrant modding community is just good journalism. Kotaku couldn’t even hope to reach this level.

    1. ISI to benefit? That’s a new one to me. Yeah sure…they are responsible for what people do in their spare time…on their own computers…

They have nothing to do with this, just as Kunos have nothing to do with the rips for their software. And only a locked down software like iracing can be free of that type of thing…with obvious setbacks to that approach of course.
Kunos and ISI both delete ripped content from their forums when it is reported, nothing else they can do, or should do IMO.

But after accusing PRC of blatant hate towards a product for the benefit of another (which isn’t true as everyone cops shit here…), it’s good to see you apply exactly the same principles 🙂

  9. Seems ISI’s Tim Westley isn’t a big fan of Assetto Corsa’s two biggest trolls: https://mobile.twitter.com/twhtly/status/656607383347712000

“Hate devs getting attacked by fans of another product. You don’t do our product any favors ‘defending’ it by attacking. Run what you like.” and this: “Seriously considering dumping people from our forum that I see being abusive to other devs on theirs. Yeah.”

Likely a preemptive move to distance ISI from those two clowns before rF2 hits Steam. At least one of the trolls has over 30 pages of posts on the AC Steam forums. Thankfully I have a life and haven’t read a single word, I’ve just seen their posting history stats on bsimracing.

I also laugh at suggestions that Wim is some how a stooge for Kunos and ISI – Hex and Associator got themselves banned because of their constant spamming within AC stories.

Here is a link to a mod Wim and his team made for rF2 which is a solid effort for an AC shill: http://www.bsimracing.com/Files/wsgt2-megane-v6-trophy/

    1. Way to go, shitting on his own tiny fan base as usual.

That Megane mod wasn’t well received, because there was already a Megane so naturally Wim blamed it all on rF2 scaring more modders away leading to even more empty servers.

They don’t know how to run a company, so switched to iRacing and never looked back.

As far as the Megane mod goes, it was well received on the official rF2 forums and Race Department. I’ve no idea why Wim stopped modding for all platforms, I presume he has his reasons.

As for the conversion, I’d love to see a few more AC tracks in rF2. I own both sims and have no issue with converted content. I’d like a few netKar Pro tracks and Fiorano from FVA in AC and rF2 as well

    2. Bollocks, Hex and Ass never attacked devs. They talk a lot but never attack.

They were banned from BSR because they pointed out some errors in GameMuscle’s video, then Wim stepped in to defend him and called them aggressive for no apparent reason. Ass then pointed to Wim’s flawed article and bias and he knew he couldn’t defend, so Wim started attacking and accusing them for all sorts of nonsense. It’s plainly childish and stupid.

From VR they were just banned for discussion, but F1Racer framed it as attacking AC. I was there when it happened and there was really no reason to ban them.

He does not need children talking nonsense. This is one of the primary reasons that I recently renewed my online subscription to rf2 after leaving it expired for over a year.

Even though Kunos can be perceived as competitor, he stands against the behavior of these shills.

That’s very, very respectable and the kind of behavior I look for from people before I give them money.
