What is Z97 motherboard?

The Intel® Z97 Express Chipset is a dual-chipset design that supports Intel® LGA1150 4th, New 4th & 5th Generation Core™ i7/Core™ i5/Core™ i3/Pentium ®/Celeron ® processors.

The integrated GPU provides high-performance graphics for gaming and multimedia applications. It also supports the integrated Storage controller which facilitates efficient storage access and management.

The Z97 Express Chipset features an advanced platform with 8 CPU sockets, 2 memory sockets, 1 PCI Express x16 host bridge, 1 PCI Express x1 bridge, one Serial Port (TX), one USB 3.0 host port and one USB 2.0 host port with support for data rates up to 10 megabits per second (Mbps). The chipset supports all the standard SATA ports as well as 6x IDE ATA ports and 8x SCSI ports (via UASP). The chipset also has a built-in Data Protection feature that prevents data loss when the chip is in sleep mode or when it's in power on mode. It can be enabled via ICH4_ENET_INET_TTL set via ICH4_ENET_INET_TTL in I915 configuration files or by using I915I817HIAI setting from I915I825HIAI configuration files; however this feature must be enabled on both devices at the same time to work properly.

Does the MSI Z97 Gaming 5 support NVMe?

With the latest BIOS, MSI X99/Z97/H97 motherboards can support NVMe devices as secondary storage under Windows7 64bit and Windows8. 1 64bit and fully support NVMe booting.

What is the difference between Z87 and Z97 chipset?

It is not a new feature of Z97. It is just a supported port for MSATA ports.

It can be used to add other devices like USB3.0 or USB2.0, FireWire or Thunderbolt, Ethernet or Wi-Fi, Card Reader etc which are not supported by the platform currently in use on the motherboard.
