We’ve got a killer reader submission today from Ruben Lopez, who doesn’t criticize Project CARS for the abundance of bugs within the next-generation racing sim, but for basic design issues centering around a feature pretty essential for racing simulations: pit stops. Project CARS is the only serious console racing sim on the market, and issues with how pit stops are handled prevent any serious league racing from occurring.
I write to you guys because I don’t think there’s enough attention on a very specific weakness of this game. By now, we’ve all seen videos of cars flying, crashing into invisible stuff, and all sorts of freak events. I have bumped into that ridiculous stuff myself, as I already illustrated in a previous submission:
That sort of freak event seems to be the main source of flak this game is getting these days, and that’s not really an accurate picture of the current problems of this game. The real picture is much worse.
Why? Because even if it’s amusing and spectacular, this sort of stuff happens once in a blue moon.
Project CARS has, as we speak, much bigger and uglier problems that I feel are not being covered properly anywhere. Sometimes when you report on this train wreck, I feel that even you guys don’t play this game enough and haven´t grasped yet how deeply flawed it is… and I don’t blame you! If I was not a console user and this game was not the only half-serious option, I wouldn’t even touch it with a stick.
But let’s get to the point: While these bizarre paranormal incidents like the one above have ruined a total of two races for me since launch, pit stops consistently ruin EVERYTHING you try to do. I don’t think any of the reports about pit stop problems that I’ve seen before are aware of half the problems you can bump into!
Every time you pit in this game, you can:
-
Receive random tyre pressures completely different from the ones you set in the pit strategy menus
-
Receive random compounds completely different from the ones you wanted your pit crew to fit in your car
-
Receive random amounts of fuel
As you can imagine, any of these issues alone can destroy a race. And mind you, the chances of them happening is huge. In fact getting a clean pit stop where your car leaves the pit lane right as you wanted without needing to correct anything is as much of a freak event as cars taking off for no reason at all.
There is absolutely no way to host or participate in any sort of multiplayer organized event, be it a league or a single long race, without the game fucking up badly the race for at least half of racers.
Now, if that wasn’t bad enough, not only bugs that reset values for not reason are a threat to your race. Some of the decisions regarding the user interface are, in lack of a polite word to describe them, retarded. No matter what class you race, the list of available compounds seems to be always the GT3 tyre range: soft, medium, hard, intermediate, and wet.
So when you set the pit strategy you want in any other class, you have no idea what will be fitted to your car. Let’s say you drive a Supercar… what will the soft compound give you? A regular road legal tyre? A tyre meant for track days? A Summer tyre?
There is just NO WAY to know. And common sense doesn’t cut it either… after messing around a bit, the track tyres I needed required the intermediate compound to fit them to your car (with random pressures, of course). Let’s remember we talk about slick track tyres, the only one available for Supercars that can NOT handle the rain. And it is required that you select intermediate for the crew to fit them. Just wow.
Another amazing decision is how you’re not allowed to prepare for your upcoming pit stop during the race. In multiplayer races, if something hasn’t gone according to plan (let´s say you got light aero damage) you must modify the pit crew work between the pit lane entry and the pit box you’re assigned. That’s often around 5-10 seconds. So, in that time you must:
- Correct the pressures, compounds and fuel load if they were reset by a bug.
- Select if you want or not to fix whatever damage the car has (depending on how many laps are left, it might be worth or not).
That is just not possible. You´ll often end up sitting in your pit box while your crew wait for you to decide what they should do.
Now, while I can sort of feel indulgent with bugs and stuff not working as intended (coding is hard and that stuff), these poorly though features really grind my gears. How can it be that in four years of development no one thought “hey, what if we let the driver tweak the strategy with the D-pad as he drives, instead of forcing him to push 35 buttons on the way to his pit box?”
Project CARS is not only an unfinished game (as the bugs show us), but it´s also a poorly thought and designed product. Coding mistakes can happen, but a studio of supposed racing enthusiasts devoted to create “the best racing game ever done” dropping the ball in very basic decisions cannot.
A good buddy of mine from High School is a huge console guy and the only reason he doesn’t migrate into the world of PC driving games is due to being technologically inept when it comes to computers. Anyways, over the weekend, we were sitting in the stands at the IHRA race up here and he mentioned that he’d picked up Project CARS for his PS4. I asked if he’d ran into the numerous glitches and issues others have had with the game, and he said the game wasn’t all that bad – and that he primarily stuck to the game’s offline Career mode.
Then, he proceeded to list off a couple of annoyances he had with the game. First, he noted how simulating to the end of a qualifying session turned the AI into absolute monsters, obliterating his pole lap by several seconds in the process. After that, he mentioned how he avoids online completely because the netcode is so atrocious, you’re constantly on the receiving end of netcode shunts comparable to early Xbox Live racers like ToCA Race Driver 2 – in his experience, driving anywhere near someone online is a game of virtual Russian roulette – you can’t do it safely.
“But it’s really not that bad, every game has bugs!”
Bro, you literally told me that you purposely avoid 50% of the game because it’s unplayable. No consumer should accept that when entire previous generations of video games have come to us in a pretty stellar state right out of the box. Hell, the game’s spiritual prequel, Race Pro, was actually pretty decent aside from a glitch that deleted your save game file – but if you were smart, you made a backup or downloaded a 100% file off the internet.
Applying this sad state of affairs to other forms of entertainment would be absolutely stupefying; teenage girls would riot in the streets if the next Harry Potter novel was a mere 160 pages and he was referred to as “Clarence” during the first six chapters. Baby boomers would question their sanity if the upcoming Star Wars film was 30 minutes long and notable critics tried to pass it off as “right-sized for younger viewers and full of action!”
But suddenly, when this occurs in the land of vidya and you point it out, “YOU’RE JUST INSANE, JAMES!”
As for the pit stop issues, I’m sure what most leagues are gonna do is run lengthy sprint races, or move to a different game altogether. Happened with the NASCAR games on consoles when Eutechnyx was given the reigns of the exclusive license, most people just bit the bullet and signed up for iRacing for their oval fix. Actually, this is already happening; Assetto Corsa saw a spike in sales after the release of Project CARS due to a bunch of unsatisfied customers just wanting a good racing sim:
Some of issues with the pit will be fixed in the next patch. They are listening.
Oh wait, I’m on PRC.net. Fuck Ian, fuck SMS and fuck WMD, right?

Fool me once….
pcars2 equals the FIFTH chance, a chance that the vast majority will not grant you. Looking at your forums, the vast majority of natural activity is due to posts from annoyed customers and 10-20 defenders of SMS attempting deflect and explain away irrefutable bugs.
Here are two quotes from the generously-titled (probably mod edited or chosen to appease bellend/mods) thread “Muliplayer = not as good as it could be”.
“PCars isn’t exactly a marketmaker game, and with so many people returning/selling back their game (no stats on this, just word of mouth from local Game Store employees), there likely isn’t that big of a pool of players to pick from at any given time.”
and another individual affirms:
“Game Stop here in town won’t buy back anymore PCars. they have a huge pile sitting there. I was shocked they ask so much for the used titles but they are required by law to not sell them for less then 75% of new or something like that. ”
Note, these aren’t guys with an anti-SMS agenda, they haven’t been banned… They are merely observing reality.
Would be interesting if we got some additional reports from stores around the nation for a future PRC article, I think.

Do you really believe that there’s enough people reading this website that could someway influence the success (or the failure) of a product? Or drive the sales?
We’re here (all of us, including you) to troll, not to do “journalism”, neither to inform the customers out there. Wake up man, this is a free blog on wordpress.com not the CNN.

No, I don’t really consider simple, valid explanations for the negative opinions to be a form of ‘journalism’, either.
Just because ScamMasterS doesn’t think their customers have the balls to nail them to the wall for false advertisement does not mean it won’t happen.
I’ve seen much sneakier companies with far more technically advanced products (much harder to represent your case if the judge cannot understand the subject) get taken down for similar behavior. All through simple and easily understood consumer protection laws that are often applied internationally to some degree.
It’s really not that hard to get certain agencies to start looking more closely at certain companies, especially if they are already on the radar of a certain UK agency…

Truth in this article. Game breaking for sure. Why play a game that doesn’t save properly so nothing works. These clowns coming in here saying the next patch will fix some issues, just stop. Cats out of the bag about SMS. They cheat steal and rip off the player. Each patch makes the game worse and everyone knows it now. This is an epic fail for SMS on console anyway. PC is alright, I think, they built it once right, but don’t give a crap about the console version other than the cash they can rape that market for. Considering the amount of time that AC had been on the market relative to pcars (and the lack of constant marketing bombardment), I think it’s pretty impressive.
For the record, pcars was on page five of ‘top sellers’ for me yesterday and jumped to page 4 today.
Games currently selling better include beamNG.Drive and wreckfest. Yesterday, it was below dirt rally and Euro truck sim 2.
No matter how you cut it, that’s not a very good performance for a fairly recent ‘full release’ title that consumed millions of dollars and 4 years of development.

To be honest, we can’t talk about the number on a way but then ignore them on the other way if we don’t “like” them. An indication of how a game is performing it’s immediately reflected on how many people are currently playing it, because you know, when you buy something you gonna use it, or are you digital video games collector? :)
Assetto Corsa 24h peak users: 1,266
Project Cars 24h peak users: 2,290
…without considering that: AC sold more than PCARS so far on PC (whenever PCARS is going to surpass their numbers); also AC is only available on PC, while PCARS is available on consoles as well.
Talking about how good PCARS is performing: it has been the first racing title to top the UK charts since the 2013 (last one was GRID2): http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/gaming/news/a646636/project-cars-is-the-first-motorsport-simulation-to-top-the-uk-chart-since-2013.html
and the game that have break a 16 years (!) Bandai record (last one was Ridge Racer) for a game to top the UK charts for 2 straight weeks, outlapping GTA5 and Mortal Kombat X: http://www.gamespot.com/articles/uk-games-chart-project-cars-breaks-sixteen-year-ba/1100-6427401/
…and in general it sold more than 1 millions copies so far, an awesome goal for a new brand title.
You also mentioned the time and the budget: I don’t know how much you know about the game development, but Project CARS is one of the AAA titles (remember: it’s not just a PC game, it’s a multiplatform title) with the lowest budget, a merit that has been evidenced many times (you may not know how a track or a car license alone may cost to the developer, especially if it has to be used on consoles), and 3.5 years development cycle are perfectly normal for a new brand title to be released on multiple platforms (how long do you think AC development lasted to release a PC game only game in “beta”? …and how much time they still need to release it on consoles?).
No matter how strong could be your hate, trying to bend the facts, while they are telling the rest of the world another story, it is a lost cause. I admire your effort, but it’s a waste of time. Good luck! ;)

I get the impression that you don’t realize we’ve already had this conversation.
Did you just paste your comment from your clipboard….?
No, pcars was not ahead of GTA 5 for two weeks. That’s clearly a false metric.
As I already said last time, topping the charts in the UK for a short period of time (it was a short blip, under a week, you continue to aggregate false data) when there was no other significant, recent releases for it compete against… It means nothing.
Kunos is a tiny team, in comparison, running on a much smaller budget and doing a better job.
No matter how you try to distort reality with ‘the game sold great so nothing else matters’, the facts of high return rates and general dissatisfaction remain.
Again, you bring this peak ‘players’ metric. Define ‘players’ and what their activities include in pcars.
If I bother to look at the metrics, I suspect AC would exhibit more sustained activity with less drastic variation, indicating longer sessions per player.. Do I expect COD to have a higher player count than something like Arma 3? Yes. What does that mean for me as a consumer? Not a damned thing.
Also, anyone can become an ‘AAA’ developer and release on multiple platforms when they are willing to scam money from hopeful sim racers and lie to Wii owners. A broken multi-platform release is nothing to laud.
Again, millions of dollars and 4+ years of development (you like to pretend they didn’t start on pcars directly after shift 2, even though you know that’s exactly what they did).
Ridiculously inept and wasteful result.

Official gaming charts are “false metrics”, but a random (you) posting on a website has the right numbers? I guess the others reading this sentence are having a good laugh as well… :)
It’s the first racing title topping the charts, and it’s the first title from Namco to break their record after 16 years. So even if you (and only you) think it’s not a success, it still a success.
Kunos has a tiny team, and in fact they released a PC only game so far (and with several missing contents). You said with “smaller budget”.. so it looks like that you know more than us about their finances. Enlighten us, how much did they pay for the licenses and for the development? And how much they still need to release it on PS4 and XB1? Waiting for it… i’m curios (and I guess i’m not the only one).
You talked about wrong metrics, but then you mention the metrics. I’m going to tell you a shocking news: the metrics are freely available on steamcharts, and AC and PCARS shares the same descending trend from the release date (it’s common for any game, not for just this two), to stabilize on a certain level, with the only difference that PCARS has double the numbers of AC, because it gives a more complete experience (hotlapping with AC is boring after a while).
It looks like you finished the arguments again: “scamming money from Wii users” … like they asked money to Wii users? Not they never sold the game to the Wii users, but you could have asked a refund at any moment, plus you could have the game for free (on PC) and have your whole amount back and if you wish even more (if you don’t ask for a refund, but you want to receive the game profits). They must be the first “scammers” in the world who are paying the scammed ppl instead of getting their money! ….you’re so mad, that you can’t even talk about the straight facts. :)

You’re really working hard to distort facts.
Firstly, the wii version was not officially canceled in time for WMD members to ask for their money back. They continued feeding clearly false information to appease the wii-focused members. Remember, it was just canceled in the last two weeks… After release.
free game ! = the reality that the majority of WMD members received discounts, NOT free games.
And yeah, I do have the right numbers.
“and AC and PCARS shares the same descending trend from the release date (it’s common for any game, not for just this two), to stabilize on a certain level, with the only difference that PCARS has double the numbers of AC”
I have been accessing the exact same metrics, probably longer than you have. You would know this if you had actually read the comments you reply to. The descending trend is NOT at all equivalent, especially if you average out the post-patch spikes for both titles. Pcars exhibits a drastically greater decline over a drastically shorter period of time. Apparently, you cannot parse basic metrics. And yes, I do see more consistent, long-term interaction from the AC player base… You’re either lying or you really do not understand the data that is presented.
Breaking a record established by ‘ridge racer’ 16 YEARS ago is an accomplishment? Apparently, we have very different ideas of success. Just the number of new potential customers that have emerged in the last 16 years alone covers the difference.
I want to see exactly where you’re getting your metrics with regards ‘top seller’ in the UK for two solid weeks. If the data isn’t entirely false, then it’s aggregated from retail. Again, the only other noteworthy releases at the time were already month(s) old.
No one was running to gamestop to buy GTAV months later, beside a select few clueless customers who like to pay more for less.
As for your throwaway comment about ‘hot lapping simulator’… AC’s multiplayer ecosystem is drastically superior to pcars in basically every single aspect. I would also argue that their AI is capable of presenting a greater challenge, aside from pcars races in the wet with botched AI tyre physics.
Kunos definitely has a smaller budget and team (the fact that you would even argue the budget aspect really speaks volumes about your honesty and knowledge), yet they created a far more feature complete game (several missing ‘contents’? Such as not including a fundamentally broken weather system and a night cycle with broken shaders?), and vastly more accurate simulation, without a doubt.
Yet again, you’ve managed to repeat yourself, misrepresent, deflect and avoid several critical points. I’m really getting tired of repeating myself.
Accomplice to scam…You should really try reading the article above before attempting to pose any sort of ‘feature complete’ comparisons.

Accusing someone else to distort the facts while your reply is full of inaccuracies and lies, is hilarious.
First, you can ask for a refund even now, in the moment i’m typing (whenever doing it at this point, considering the returns would be stupid).. but hey people might have their opinion, so it’s up to them. Your first lie.
Any member, including the lower tiers will receive the same amount they paid initially back (because of the return fees, or because they could ask for a refund). It means having the game completely for free (and having a profit from it, if you wish), without counting the fact that you had the opportunity to participate to the development, and after have played it for 3 years. Even a Team Member could have the game for free: -50% discount, + receiving back the money initially put in (that covers the other 50%) = having the game for free. And this is your second lie.
You call AC a feature complete simulator, while it lacks of basic features that could be found in the others sims? We don’t even need to disturb Project CARS, we can even found them in rF1. You don’t have to convince me, every AC owner knows that the only fun you can have atm in the game is hot lapping. You think differently.. so continuing on this point it would be a waste of time.
Ah… and you still say that Kunos used a smaller budget to develop the game and to pay the license. I’m still waiting the exact amount, coz if you say it’s smaller, it’s obvious that you know the right number… so tell us, what they are?
LikeLike
Hm, that’s funny, because there’s a thread on the forums where a user nails bell and his crew, they attempt to deflect for a page or two and finally Bell issued a ‘one-time’ refund directly to that user.
Do I need to find the link for you? Don’t pretend you didn’t see it, I’m certain you are very active, attempting to bury all complaints with ‘as designed explanations’.
Let’s see some proof that they are honoring WMD-specific refund requests after release, because I’ve seen zero evidence that refunds are still being honored, besides the singular instance I mentioned above.
“without counting the fact that you had the opportunity to participate to the development, and after have played it for 3 years. ”
Hahaha, you really think we aren’t aware of what happened, don’t you? Participating in development equaled checking their builds for critical errors, ignored opinions and two roadmaps; one for tricking potential customers with irrelevant bullet points, the other being an internal roadmap that entirely dictated development based on potential profits. Apparently, it was the same roadmap used for shift 2.
Also, considering the state of the game currently, are you really claiming that ‘playing’ even worse versions was some sort of reward?
None of you have received any money, none of you know the actual returned unit metrics , nor do you know when or how much exactly you will receive, because the terms you agreed to allow SMS to do whatever they want. So, you simply have promises made by untrustworthy individuals. Have fun cashing those promises. We’ll return to this when you have a redacted scan of a check to share with us and some supporting, 3rd party reports that the checks received from SMS are at least generally valid.
Reading comprehension is important. I called AC more feature complete than pcars. Everyone with experience in the titles you mentioned knows full well that rf1 has features that are not present in AC, and they are also not present in pcars… Again, AC has a vastly superior multiplayer implementation (nope, not league ready/rf1 level, no shit) compared to pcars, as I already said.
And yeah, I’m 100% confident that AC has a smaller budget. All indications and available data confirm this. Since you’re a self-appointed expert on judging relative budgets directly against available data, how about you reveal to us exactly how much pcars has cost in total?
After lauding pcars for being multi-platform, you’re really going to pretend that kunos managed to fritter away more money with their currently PC-only release and smaller team? Are you really that stupid?
After I see your official data from pcars, including advertising, returned units and distribution fees, I will provide you with my best estimate of AC’s budget, with sources and supporting information.
If we can both provide data that is deemed accurate, then I bet you your entire, currently non-existant pcars ‘return’ that I am right. We can set up escrow right now (of course, you’ll need to use real money when funding your half of the escrow, not empty promises). Put your ‘returns’ where your mouth is if you really want to continue pretending I’m not right.
The onus is on YOU and your cronies to make good on your promises. Given historical data, there’s no reason to trust any of you.
I, on the other hand, owe you nor anyone else anything.
Boy, I hope you’re one of the high toolpack ’10x-manager’ ‘investors’….. I’m going to enjoy the money and it will be of no consequence to me if you ever see a dime from ScamMasterS or not.
Let me know when you’re ready to move forward on this bet and let me know what service provider you prefer. If you even try to bullshit me in any way with your escrow provider suggestions (as I expect from someone who is willfully dishonest), I will know it. Don’t try to start that game.
Try again, pretending(?) you can’t read will only get you so far.

You seem quite dense so let´s use examples and let´s hope you can grasp it that way: imagine you´re locked for months in a ship with 30 dirty male sailors and a girl that´s not that beatiful, and that is completely nuts. That girl is PCARS.
Got it now? Being more desirable than male dirty sailors is NOT a compliment of any sort, yet you try to twist it that way. That makes you the girl´s desperate mother.

Honestly dude, you shouldn’t. Not about pcars or anything else, you shouldn’t do something you don’t like. Turn off that PC and enjoy the summer.

Sounds like he has a console and is waiting for some upcoming releases. Meanwhile, he struggles with pcars in an attempt to get a his sim fix.
Even if kunos royally fucks up, a real sim WILL be brought to the console ecosystem, one way or another. Just a waiting game at this point.
That said, I don’t exactly disagree. He might be better off enjoying the summer/playing something else while he waits. Maybe pcars patch ‘9999.9’ in Q4 ’16 will yield a playable experience?

Funny how wmd shills, the ultimate trolls, try and accuse people pointing out the games flaws as trolls.

Yes mr. Anonymous shill you are trying to divert attention; you’ve consistently failed to come up with a legitimate response to all of the games bugs.

I’ll just leave this here:
Thanks to this site, showing all the dirt side of Project Cars, from forum bans to Ian Bell attitude, I didn’t buy the game. I was going to, the game was on my Steam Cart, then I just completely ignored the game in a way I never did before. And I’m very glad for it.
Why don’t understand why its players keep defending the game as if it was perfect.

The game isn’t perfect, it’s just more enjoyable than anything else available.. in other words: it is fun, that is what it counts (for me) in a video game.

Enjoyable even without functioning pit stops? 😕
